Expressive therapies
Expressive therapies are a type of mental health therapy that use creative activities such as art, music, movement, writing or storytelling to support emotional wellbeing. These therapies can help people express feelings, reduce stress, process difficult experiences and develop healthy coping skills.
Expressive therapies may benefit children, teens and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief or other mental health concerns. They can be provided in individual, couple, family or group settings. No artistic or musical experience is required to participate.
Common approaches include art therapy, which may involve drawing, painting or sculpting; dance/movement therapy, which incorporates movement as part of therapy; and music therapy, which may include listening to, creating or moving to music.
